Information for Newcomers

If you are new to the city, you might find these information are of your interests.

Living cost:
Even though Bath is relatively a small city please be informed that prices might be higher than those in big cities. Therefore, whenever possible sourcing your needs to nearby big cities, like Bristol would be of advantage. Furthermore, the relatively small space make it impossible for all the big supermarkets to come. There are only Iceland, Waitrose, Sainsbury's, and Morrison's operating in the city so that the competition which usually help push down the prices is not as though as in the big city in which ASDA and TESCO would normally lead the competition.

Halal food:
If you come from other countries, especially Muslim countries, you have to be careful in buying your food. Only food imported from Muslim countries would normally carry the Halal label. Nonetheless, the EU has regulated vegetarian labelling which in effect force food manufacturer to put a V label only when the product is free from any animal product. Due to the small size, it appears that there is no feasible halal meat or other product shop can survive in Bath. Therefore, most Bathonian Muslims buy their halal meat and other product from Bristol. If you are a student, the Bath University Islamic Society would help you buy the meat and other products from halal butchers and shops in Bristol.
